Altar Society

Environment and alter care is a ministry that looks to provide a visually pleasant space to inspire the congregation to worship. Plants are grown and cared for in the rectory green house, then rotated to the sanctuary.

Appropriate liturgical colors and fresh cut arrangements are used to enhance the space. Alter cloths are also cared for by the ministry. Help is needed two or three times weekly to water, arrange, and decorate the sanctuary, as well as caring for the planters in the front of the church.

Please call the front office to get in contact with Diane Lott.

About The Church

St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church

The beginnings of the Church in this area of coastal Georgia date back some four hundred years, long before Oglethorpe established himself at Frederica. From 1566-1742 Spanish missionaries labored, suffered, and were martyred in this locality for the cause of the faith. In 1791 the island of Jekyll was purchased by the du Bignon family. From time to time the head of this family arranged to have a visiting priest celebrate Mass for his family and his slaves.
